Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) Canada

Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) is an evidence-based program that works with families in the home to support parents, primarily mothers, in their critical role as their child’s first and most important teacher. HIPPY strengthens families and communities by empowering mothers to actively prepare their children for success in school.

Over the past 16 years, HIPPY Canada has reached out to provide more than 8,500 low-income newcomer, Aboriginal and other Canadian mothers with structured lessons and practical information that develop their own and their children’s personal skills, ensuring both children and families a better opportunity to succeed in school and society.

In Canada, HIPPY’s efforts to measure results, combined with more than 20 years of research in the United States and eight other countries, have proven the benefits of the program for children, mothers, families and communities.

His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston, C.C., C.M.M, C.O.M., C.D., Governor General of Canada, and Her Excellency, Sharon Johnston are Patrons of HIPPY Canada.

Monthly Stories of Change

Celebrating women who are making a difference.

Rana Jaleel is a HIPPY mother who came to Canada as a refugee from the war-torn Iraqi city of Mosul in 2015.

I am very thankful to my home visitor Shahla who introduced me to the HIPPY program, It was very tough to be alone with no help and not familiar with language and culture of totally new Country. This program have helped me a lot to adjust and bring me out of depression and isolation. Hippy program has given me the confidence to do the things which were hard for me to do if I wasn’t in the program.

I would like to thank Hippy Canada for transforming my life in new Country. It is such a great program which has made me comfortable to start my new life. They have provided me with educational material and information for my son and linked me with many resources available in our community for new comers. Best thing about the program is that it is free of charge.
I hope with your generous support this program keep up with its achievements and transform the life of others, like it did for me.

Joahna_Carvallo-Salas_01Originally from Peru, Joahna immigrated to Canada with her husband and son, only to quickly discover a new life burdened with language issues, isolation, and homesickness. Equally discouraging was learning that her Peruvian credentials weren’t recognized in the job market. Depression could have overwhelmed her, yet when Joahna decided to study English, HIPPY exceeded her expectations. Her bond with her son blossomed, his literacy skills improved, and
HIPPY group meetings connected Joahna with other mothers who provided crucial support for her renewed sense of independence to begin exploring her neighbourhood and the resources it could offer.

After accepting a position as a Home Visitor, Joahna had the unique opportunity to work alongside a HIPPY child with autism. The profound impact of this experience ultimately inspired her to pursue training in behavioural intervention for special needs children.

“I never thought I could actually go to college…it’s a privilege for me, to be a part of this family…HIPPY is very rewarding.”
